A myriad of emotions crossed Sami’s features. Her happiness at remembering, quickly followed by guilt and confusion over the reason for her brief memory.

It was telling that she only remembered being on the fire tower, not his proposal. Or their engagement.

He pushed aside the stab of disappointment to focus on the positive. “I’m glad you remember the fire tower, Sami, even if you don’t remember anything else about us being there. A small memory is progress.”

“Is it?” She tucked a stray strand of windblown hair behind her ear. The trip down the shoreline had caused much of her hair to escape the ponytail. “I want to believe more memories will follow, Quinn, but so far nothing important has come back. What good are bits of memory if they’re useless?” She sighed with frustration. “We need to know who the gunmen are and why they’re coming after me. Oh, and it would also be nice to know if I’m working undercover as Angelina and who the Hispanic guy was too.”

“Give it time,” he urged.

“We don’t have time,” she snapped, then winced. “Sorry, this is hardly your fault.”

“No need to apologize. I’m encouraged that the rest you’ve gotten so far seems to be helping.” He turned the wheel to head back toward the marina. His intent was to use the public dock to keep the boat overnight, then find a place to stay. Maybe a cheaper place since he’d already spent so much of the cash Rhy had given them on other necessities.

The biggest problem facing them was the need to create a plan. A way to figure out what was going on. To understand the source of the danger.

Too bad he was completely out of ideas.

Quinn maneuvered the Malibu into a slip on the public pier. As before, Sami readily jumped in to help bring the boat in, instinctively knowing what needed to be done.

“I wouldn’t mind getting something to eat.” He glanced at her as they walked up the pier toward shore. He’d left the duffel in the boat for now, figuring they’d grab it later. “There are plenty of places within walking distance.”

“Sounds good.” She cocked her head. “You’re all about the food, Finnegan.”

He stumbled at her teasing; the comment was something she’d often said to him during their time together. “Hey, you didn’t grow up with eight siblings. I had to hold my own with Rhy, Tarin, and Brady, or I’d never get enough to eat. Those guys were chowhounds.”

“At least you had food,” Sami shot back. “Being in foster care meant that was never a certainty.”

“You remember the year you spent in foster care?” Quinn asked. “Before your uncle took you in?”

She abruptly stopped. “I lived in foster care? I must have, or why would I have said that,” she answered her own question.

“You did. You told me about it. You lost your parents, the way I did. You had an uncle, but there was some problem with your parents’ estate. They had to get that settled before they’d allow you to live with your uncle.
